Hi guys!

Me and my boyfriend are going to spend lovely week in Hawaii. We are from N. California. We are both freedivers and I hope we won't have problems with that. But my boyfriend is crazy about spearfishing. And I will be thankful if anyone can give me some information about sperfishing in Big Island - rentals, phones, charters, rules etc.

Thanks a lot!

Depends on what sort of freediving you'd be doing.

Meanwhile, there are a ton of great diving spots around the island. I always like to suggest Mahukona and Honaunau.

If you're going to spearfish, watch out for the tang fish such as the yellow tang:

There are numerous fish of this sort here in Hawai'i and not all of them have so obvious a barb at their tail as the yellow tang. They have full mobility with this razor sharp spur of bone and it flicks forward as opposed to backward. If you spear one of these, I strongly encourage you to avoid it until it's absolutely positively dead. Lots of folks get their hands torn up reaching for these guys just as they give one last thrash that manages to open a hand up to the bone.

Other than that...just don't piss off the locals as you do it. :p

Oh and you can check here at http://www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar/fish_regs/index.htm for the pertinent regulations. As long as you're not commercial, you don't need a license out here.
